Koret Scholars Program

Nature of Research/Program Description:

The Koret Scholars Program is funded by a generous grant from the Koret Foundation and provides scholarships to undergraduate students for a variety of research projects and experiences from every division across campus. The grant also supports the Koret Slam -  a symposium event where Koret Scholars present their work to the public. Koret Scholars are recognized by name in the UC Santa Cruz commencement program at the end of each spring quarter.

UC Santa Cruz has a commitment to undergraduate education and student success. Undergraduate participation in research plays a significant role in the academic achievement and retention of students. The Koret Scholars Program is just one example of the outstanding research opportunities available to UCSC students.

Targeted Students/ Eligibity Requirements:

Applicants must be an undergraduate student enrolled in Winter and/or Spring quarters at UC Santa Cruz, and be in good academic standing. Applicants will be required to provide access to educational records for verification purposes. Previous Koret Scholars are not eligible to apply. Applicants must have a UC Santa Cruz faculty or UC Santa Cruz graduate student as a mentor for the project. Applicants are required to work with their mentor to develop and complete a research project. Research projects can be student, or mentor-originated. Research projects must be completed prior to the student's graduation.

Expectations: It is recommended, but not required, for Koret Scholars to work with their mentor in a 2 or 5 credit Individual Studies course. The Koret Scholarship is intended to support undergraduate students in a research project outside their courses in collaboration with faculty and/or graduate students. As such, research projects can not be assignments in regular courses. However, new research projects could be developed out of previous coursework. Koret Scholars must complete a survey before and after their research experience. Koret Scholars agree to present their project in the "Koret Research Slam" at the end of spring quarter.
