Dance concert: Splinters in Our Ankles

With new choreography by dance professor Gerald Casel, UCSC's annual modern dance concert features student dancers and members of GERALDCASELDANCE, Casel's San Francisco-based company. The concert will feature a non-traditional choreographic response based on the tinikling, the Pilipino traditional folk dance. This new work examines this beloved dance with tropes not usually associated with it, including themes of cultural amnesia, colonized bodies, and performed resistance. With live musical accompaniment. (Our presentation at UCSC is a preview of an evening-length piece that will premiere at ODC Theater in December.)
