The Center for Research in Storage Systems is an NSF funded partnership between academic and industry within the Jack Baskin School of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Composed of faculty from the Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering departments, our research focuses on many aspects of big data and storage systems. We have active projects in genomic storage, energy and performance, archival storage, file systems for next-generation storage devices, and data deduplication. We also focus upon cross-cutting issues such as security and reliability in file and storage systems. You're encouraged to browse a full list of our projects.
Undergraduates can contribute substantially to projects and are often co-authors on published papers. We are especially interested in recruiting students with a background in genomics, bio-molecular engineering, informatics, computer science and engineering. Typically, third year (junior) students begin with a mentored independent study project at CRSS. Those that demonstrate research acumen are eligible for funding from the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at NSF, part of the supplemental funding provided to CRSS. Successful fourth year (senior) students receive funding to participate in research shoulder-to-shoulder with our graduate student researchers and are encourage to take graduate coursework and consider graduate school. CRSS currently provides full support for ten (10) graduate student researchers.
